Mohammad Reza Mortazavi began playing the drums as a child and learned traditional styles from the outset. However, his curiosity and inner spirit of exploration led him to develop a new, independent style of playing that combines tradition and innovation. In Mortazavi's personal style, playing the daf goes beyond rhythm: sounds, effects, overtones, and subtle vibrations of the instrument interweave to create a world of sound full of color and energy. In this world, concentration and letting go are not contradictory, but form a harmonious balance—two fundamental principles that are at the heart of his artistic and pedagogical approach. In this two-day workshop, Mortazavi will introduce participants to his unique playing style and provide insights into the ideas and concepts behind his compositions. The course is primarily aimed at players of the daf or erbane (the Persian-Kurdish frame drum), but is also open to other frame drums that are played in lap style. |
